Meet Sonya Sasser

 

Candidate for Horry County School Board District 7

 

 

Sonya earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Clinical Dietetics and Nutrition from the University of Pittsburgh in 1996 and began her career as a clinical dietitian at Conway Medical Center (CMC).

She has been a registered dietitian for thirty years and has worked in the healthcare field focusing on cardiac rehabilitation, wellness promotion, and nutrition education. 

“During my time as a clinical dietitian, I participated in community outreach programs across the more remote areas of Horry County, providing free nutrition advice to those with limited access to medical education.

It was an eye-opening experience for me. That professional background, paired with years of volunteering in our schools as a parent, has given me a unique perspective on our district. I truly understand the challenges and needs of our students, educators, and families.”

Sasser was a stay-at-home mother during her children’s formative years, actively engaging in their education as an involved parent and serving in various roles at the school, including classroom liaison, front desk associate, and kindergarten art assistant. 

She has been practicing as an entrepreneur and licensed esthetician for the past six years, and she recently relocated her practice to downtown Conway. 

She has also been active in local Republican Party leadership, supporting efforts to strengthen community engagement. 

Sonya has been a proven advocate for civic responsibility, student safety, and parental rights at the state level. She advocated for the passage of the Save Women's Sports Act (passed in April 2022) and the Student Physical Privacy Act (passed in May 2026) through active onsite engagement at the State House on introduction and voting days. She campaigned to protect college students’ due process rights against unconstitutional campus tribunals under Title IX frameworks. She is also advocating for the Parental Rights Bill (H4757) to codify parental rights as the cornerstone of K-12 educational development.
